Cordless vacuums have taken over store shelves, but corded models have not gone anywhere. Each has real strengths. The right choice depends on the size of your home, your floors, and how you like to clean.
Suction and cleaning power
Corded vacuums draw steady power from the wall, so they keep full suction for as long as you need it, which is ideal for deep-cleaning thick carpet. Modern cordless stick and handheld vacuums are strong enough for hard floors, rugs and everyday messes, and many have a boost mode for tough spots, though boost drains the battery quickly.
Runtime
A corded vacuum runs as long as you do. Cordless handhelds typically run for 15 to 30 minutes, and stick vacuums for roughly 30 to 60 minutes on their standard setting. That is enough for an apartment or a quick daily tidy, but larger homes may need a second battery or a recharge partway through.
Convenience and weight
This is where cordless shines. There is no cord to plug in, untangle or move from outlet to outlet, so you are more likely to clean little and often. Handhelds weigh just a few pounds and are perfect for stairs, furniture and car interiors. Corded uprights are heavier but often have bigger dust bins and wider cleaning paths.
Cost and upkeep
- Corded: often cheaper for the same suction, and no battery to replace.
- Cordless: lithium batteries gradually lose capacity and may need replacing after a few years. Check whether replacement batteries are available.
- Both: wash or replace filters regularly, empty the bin before it is full, and cut hair off brush rolls to keep suction strong.
Which one should you choose?
- Apartment or small home with mostly hard floors: a cordless stick vacuum is usually all you need.
- Larger home with lots of carpet: a corded upright or canister for weekly deep cleans, plus a handheld for quick jobs.
- Pets: look for a motorized brush that resists hair wrap and a washable filter, whichever type you choose.
- Car owners: a compact cordless handheld with a crevice tool makes vacuuming seats and footwells quick.
The best of both
Many households end up with both: a corded or full-size vacuum for the weekly clean and a lightweight cordless handheld for crumbs, pet hair, stairs and the car. If you can only buy one, choose based on where most of your mess happens and how much time you want to spend cleaning.
